I wasn't sure if blueberries are in season right now so I Googled it. They aren't. Their peak season is May through August. I tried to scroll through and pick a different dessert (I always seem to pick a dessert item as one of my two pledged recipes to try) but I kept going back to the blueberry one. I printed it anyway and decided I would give frozen blueberries a try. In the produce section they had tons of blueberries. Odd, right? The regular ones were gigantic and my personal taste is toward smaller berries. So I tasted an organic one that was smaller. Perfect. I've always steered clear of any organic fruits and veggies. There's just something too hippie about them. Sure, there's no pesticides but I bet they get a good rub down with patchouli oil and burned sage fumes. Then, last week the only bananas left were organic so I had to buy them. They tasted great and lasted longer than the usual bananas I buy. Now I find some yummy blueberries in February. It's something to consider--they're not great for the budget though, at all. I had all the ingredients already except the blueberries and buttermilk so this was an easy decision. The batter was pretty thick but I was able to smooth everything out in the pan and pop it in the oven.
I baked it for about 30 minutes and it came out looking like this.
I know it probably looks a little underdone but it was perfect--I did the toothpick test and everything. I had some for dessert while it was still warm.
Look at all those blueberries! This cake is delicious. And it was even better the next day because I could taste the lemon zest. This would be a perfect addition to a nice brunch. Add some fresh fruit and a quiche and you're all set for a lovely meal. Dang, I just realized I didn't try it warm with butter. I love blueberry muffins with butter. I guess I have another excuse to make it again and try that butter. I don't have my next recipe selected yet but I'll probably go with a savory entree item.
